A Big Cheese For the White House book review by Elena

Title of the Book: A Big Cheese For the White House, The True Tale of Tremendous Cheddar
Author Name: Candace Fleming
 Reviewer's Name: Elena
 Publisher: Douglas & McIntyre Ltd.
Date of Publication: 1999
 Rating: 1-5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is great for audiences of all ages. The book details the determination of the town of Cheshire, Massachusetts. After hearing of the cheese feats of the town of Norton, Connecticut, the town's cheese business goes at risk. To solve this, they choose to increase their popularity by creating a giant wheel of cheddar cheese. Throughout this entire process though, one of the members of the town decides to criticize the entire process. The town perseveres through and ends up being able to make the giant cheese. The criticizer and town mayor then deliver the cheese to Washington DC. During the process, word spreads quickly of the cheese, leading to celebrations. Impressed by the cheese, the critic finally respects the effort of the townspeople.
This book teaches all the importance of perseverance. Throughout the novel, the characters are constantly pushing their limits and are quick to problem solve. The addition of the critic also teaches all to do what they believe in, instead of being bogged down by others.

The author uses many art forms to relate these themes. One of the most notable methods is the use of diction. The manner in which the author uses older English throughout the novel, sets the theme for the reader, allowing the author to create the setting in the readers’ minds.

Another technique the author uses for this is illustrating the characters in timely-appropriate outfits and using the technology of the time. These outfits and technologies also set the theme for the reader, making it clear when this novel is occurring. Another reason for my rating is the character development the author uses throughout the novel. The development of the critic shows readers that people can change, and that ideas can constantly change. Overall, it is for these reasons that I believe that this novel deserves 5/5 Stars, due to the surprising depth and development of the book.
