Hannah Is My Nam
e by Belle Yang's novel is about a young girl and her experiences after she comes to America. We follow Hannah as she navigates through a new language and new setting. We are introduced to Hannah when she just comes to America and the first thing she found unusual was that she needed to change her name. After that, we get to see her parents struggle to get a green card and find work. We follow her through school, where she watches her friend get deported, and then almost gets caught without a green card at her Baba’s work. In addition Her mother gets fired, and Hannah tries to reassure her that she doesn't need toys. In the end, we see that they successfully got a green card and we see them very happy. I think that this book is a great representation of people's struggles coming to America. Not only were there no stereotypes, but the book itself was written by someone from Taiwan. We get to see the story through the eyes of someone who experienced the same thing.

I think this book is great for teaching children and even adults about the struggles people have in America, in addition to showing how similar we all are. I think this is important because representation means a lot to a lot of people, and accurate representation is the most impactful. This book helps us be more understanding and open-minded when we think of others' situations and has a mindset where we understand that we don’t know everybody's situation. I believe this book is a great read whether you’re a child or an adult because it gives good representation and people can learn a lot from it. Overall I give this book a high rating for being an educationally fun book that can help kids grow to be great people.
