Title of the Book: War for Independence

Rating: 3 Stars ★★★☆☆

The book War for Independence by Bentley Boyd is about different important aspects of the American War for Independence. The book explores the role of John Paul Jones, women, the battle of Saratoga, and Yorktown. The book is in a comic book style and uses a lot of bright colors, very little shading, and bolded words to convey infliction. My favorite part of the book was the way it made the story interesting which helped to educate an audience that would normally find learning boring. The book connects to the IB learner profile by teaching readers to The purpose of this book is to educate people on what happened during the War for Independence and to highlight important yet overlooked factors of the war. This book utilizes a comic book format to help captivate the intended audience. Through the use of bold colors, hyperbole, and imagery, the book conveys the story of the War for Independence in an interesting and captivating way. Another way the book helps to educate its reader is by having someone from today and a blue crab watching and commenting on the events. This story does a good job of using visuals to captivate the audience.

The only problem I found was that it was a little hard to follow, possibly because of the formatting, however, after getting used to the way the book is formatted, it isn’t as much of a problem. While the book is clearly not intended for an older and/or more mature audience, it still does a good job conveying what it is intended to convey. The use of characters from contemporary times makes the book more relatable and helps audiences connect with what is happening in the story. Overall, the story is pretty good and does a good job of doing what it is intended to do.
